BEIJING-BOUND: CANADIAN SYNCHRO TEAM CLINCHES OLYMPIC QUALIFIER BRONZE AND A SPOT AT 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES
April 19, 2008, BEIJING: The Canadian synchronized swimming team is on its way to the 2008 Olympic Games. After a stellar performance in the team free routine at the Good Luck Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Synchronized Swimming Qualification Tournament, the Canadian team secured third position and an Olympic berth.
“The momentum leading up to this performance was intense. There was a lot of pressure to perform well and qualify for the Games. This week we closed the gap with the top countries,” says Canadian Head Coach Denise Sauve. “We are so proud of our performance today. It was an amazing experience for everyone, particularly the swimmers!”
Athletes Marie Pier Boudreau-Gagnon (Riviere du Loup, Que.), Dominika Kopcik (Surrey, BC), Elise Marcotte (L’Ancienne-Lorette, Que.), Marie-Pierre Gagne (Montreal, Que.), Jessika Dubuc (Mercier, Que.), Jennifer Song (Calgary, Alta.), Eve Lamoureux (Montreal, Que.), Tracy Little (Montreal, Que.), with alternates Isabelle Rampling (Burlington, Ont.) and Alison McKenny (Calgary, Alta.) received a free routine score of 47.917, bringing their combined technical routine (47.417) and free routine score to 95.334 points.
The Spanish team grabbed the gold in the team event, with a free routine score of 49.084 and an aggregate score of 97.834. Japan trailed Spain by seven tenths of a point in the free routine (48.334) and acquired a combined score of 96.501 points.
Italy claimed fourth spot with a free routine score of 47.583, and an aggregate score of 94.750.
By securing a team berth today, the duet of Boudreau-Gagnon and Rampling automatically earns a spot in the Olympic duet competition. The duet will take to the pool for the duet free routine final event tomorrow.
