Durham Swimmers Bring Home Silver Medals From 2007 Canada Winter Games!

Durham Synchro's Katie LePage, Julia Maclean and Chelsey Matthews have returned home with silver medals around their necks, thanks to an outstanding effort in team, duet and solo competition at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse , Yukon ! Congratulations, girls, we are so proud of you!

Katie and Chelsey also won the silver medal in Flight A duet, while Julia brought home a stellar second-place finish in Flight B solo, as well as an incredible fifth-place standing in the Tier 7 Jr. figures competition, in a field of 85 swimmers from across Canada .

"The Games were an awesome experience,” says Julia. “It was really cool to meet and see other athletes compete in their sports. I was proud to represent Team Ontario in synchronized swimming and be a part of the silver medal team."

Katie and Chelsey , who competed against 19 top duets from across Canada , finished third in preliminary competition. In the finals, they delighted teammates, coaches and Team Ontario supporters alike who watched bronze turn into silver as the girls had the swim of their lives to edge out Alberta for second place.

“We knew we had a chance at bronze, but Katie and I really wanted silver for Team Ontario and for Durham Synchro,” says Chelsey .

In team competition, Ontario could not catch the powerhouse team from Quebec , but did take silver with an electrifying performance of their “Bollywood” routine.

“The Games were an incredible experience,” adds Katie, who, like Julia, has international experience as a former member of the 13-15 National Team. “Having the opportunity to compete with and watch some of the best athletes in Canada gave us an appreciation for all sports.  Our hard work over the last eight months paid off when we came home with two silver medals.”

On their day off from competition, the girls enjoyed a dog sledding excursion with their Team Ontario coaches and teammates, in spite of the -30C temperatures.

Team Ontario has also won the coveted Canada Games flag, which is awarded to the province with the greatest number of Canada Games Flag points.

All three girls are looking forward to the remainder of their regular competitive schedule with their Tier 7 Jr. team at Durham Synchro, coached by Holley Lundmark and Leslie Wickens .
