DSC Christmas Water Show Draws in Large Crowd to Assist Settlement House

Durham Synchro’s Provincial and National competitive teams revealed a tantalizing snap shot of their routines to a sold out crowd during DSSC’s annual Christmas Water Show held on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium, Centennial Pool. The Water Show was given an official opening by Oshawa’s newly elected mayor and former synchro parent, The Honourable John Henry. Donations of non-perishable food items were accepted on behalf of Simcoe Hall Settlement House in Oshawa. Additional fundraising efforts included a number of draws and raffles held periodically throughout the event.

Sporting the club’s lovely, new turquoise and pink Spacing Suits, teams and soloists performed to a range of energetic and sensitive classical tempos to contemporary beats.  Each team dazzled the audience with spectacular tricks and sharp choreography. Although some routines were still under development and routine costumes in production, there was a clear vision conveyed – DSSC is preparing for a flurry of medals in the new year. Soloists Wenjing Deng coached by Julia Maclean (13-15 Yr. Old National team), Samantha Low coached by Jenilee Keslering (11-12 Yr. Old Provincial team) and Alicia Lopers coached by Julia Maclean (10 Yrs. & Under Provincial team) mesmerized the crowd with dramatic solos. The Masters Duet team of Jenilee Keslering and Julia Maclean (Head Coach Holley Lundmark) illustrated dynamic precision and artistry that left a disappointed crowd when the music ended. The finale featured the 16-18 Yr. Old National team (Coach Lundmark) who introduced their routine with a canoeist themed spectacle that transformed into theatrical highlights and swimmers performing aerial feats. Each performance by the many duet and competitive teams drew in the audience which was clearly audible by enthusiastic cheers or breath held silences as swimmers performed lively or tranquil water ballads that conveyed a story or message with every movement, hand gesture or expression. DSSC’s next water show will be in the spring 2011. If the calibre of the current routines is any indication, the polished performances will be truly awe inspiring!

Not forgetting the season of giving, DSSC Vice President Denise Nickerson delivered two truckloads of non-perishable food items collected during this event to Simcoe Hall Settlement House while another amount was brought other drop stations within the community – a new record for the club! The generosity of those attending this special event illustrated the charitable spirit of the synchro families and friends who gave to assist those in need within the community.
