DSC Masters Team Takes Top Spot at 2011 Masters Open Provincial Championships

While the waters of the Otonabee River shimmered in the background, the blue waters of the Trent University Aquatic Centre churned with the lifts, kicks and splashes from the athletes participating in the 2011 Masters Open Provincials on May 7, 2011 hosted by Kawartha Trent Synchro. Masters teams from Southern Ontario displayed their amazing talents to a crowd of spectators and competitors alike. Solo, Duet and Teams categories ranged from 18 – 64 years emphasizing that competitive synchronized swimming doesn’t have to end after the age of 30.

The most impressive spectacle came from the Durham Synchro Masters team who shook up the competition with a dramatic otherworldly routine featuring spectacular highlights, raw power and intense emotional displays. There were no surprises when they took the top podium spot in the 18-34 Year Old Free Team division topping six other competitive teams. Coached by DSC’s Head Coach, Holley Lundmark, team members Anna Ardron, Melissa Dermody, Kirsten Femson, Meaghan Hartwell, Kendra Jacobs, Rebecca Jasper, Jenilee Keslering (Captain), Lauren Lepage and Julia Maclean looked powerful and elegant in stunning routine suits featuring a clawed hand applique with fiery red nails sewn to the back of their suits. Exaggerated expressions conveyed the ferocity of the emotional content of the routine and powerful highlights left the crowd wanting to see more from this team. With the FINA World Championships in Italy another year away, Durham Synchro can be expected to return home with additional awards to be placed alongside the silver medal they won in 2010.
